The Un-Series: Week 7 Day 2

1 Samuel 16:12-23(NLT)

12So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.

And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.”

13So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.

14Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and the Lord sent a tormenting spirit[b] that filled him with depression and fear.

15Some of Saul’s servants said to him, “A tormenting spirit from God is troubling you. 16Let us find a good musician to play the harp whenever the tormenting spirit troubles you. He will play soothing music, and you will soon be well again.”

17“All right,” Saul said. “Find me someone who plays well, and bring him here.”

18One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”

19So Saul sent messengers to Jesse to say, “Send me your son David, the shepherd.” 20Jesse responded by sending David to Saul, along with a young goat, a donkey loaded with bread, and a wineskin full of wine.

21So David went to Saul and began serving him. Saul loved David very much, and David became his armor bearer.

22Then Saul sent word to Jesse asking, “Please let David remain in my service, for I am very pleased with him.”

23And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away. (NLT)*

I tend to have a little bit of a competitive nature, which can lead me down a path of comparison. I compare my abilities and gifts against others’ and wish I could be as gifted as them.  This is especially true in serving.  I question if my gifts are big enough to even offer to the body of Christ, because what I’m doing seems so minimal.

However, as I read today about David’s service to Saul, it reminds me that God can use any gift for His glory. David’s obedience and gift of playing the harp led him down this path which offered him an opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of how to be a king; a gift that seemed small, yet led to much.

The body of Christ has many parts all working together for the glory of His Kingdom.  We each have a part to play, some big and some small, but every part is important.  YOUR role is important.  Ask God to use the gifts He has given you in ways you never could imagine.
