The Un-Series: Week 9 Day 5

Ruth 3:6-13 (ESV)

So she went down to the threshing floor and did just as her mother-in-law had commanded her. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain. Then she came softly and uncovered his feet and lay down. At midnight the man was startled and turned over, and behold, a woman lay at his feet!   He said, “Who are you?” And she answered, “I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.” And he said, “May you be blessed by the Lord, my daughter. You have made this last kindness greater than the first in that you have not gone after young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask, for all my fellow townsmen know that you are a worthy woman. And now it is true that I am a redeemer. Yet there is a redeemer nearer than I.   Remain tonight, and in the morning, if he will redeem you, good; let him do it. But if he is not willing to redeem you, then, as the Lord lives, I will redeem you. Lie down until the morning.”

I encourage you to take some extra time to read all of Ruth chapter three.  If you did, were you reading in anticipation of what was going to happen next like I was? I could almost see this playing out like a movie scene in my head and I was hooked. Ruth (and Naomi) had endured so much and while God continually had been providing for them, Ruth marrying again would have been the ultimate blessing. I want to pause here for a moment and think about something. When we read different passages in the Bible, we have a “bigger picture” perspective because we have the historical context as well as having all the Scriptures; we know what happens next.

What if we had that perspective for our own lives, do you think that would put us at ease? I am not sure it would be a good thing for us to have a completely filled out “bigger picture” of our life in that sense, but isn’t it comforting knowing that God does? He is sovereign and He can see so much more than we can amid whatever we are going through. We see His faithfulness repeatedly throughout the Bible and we can know that He will also be faithful to us as well.
