Spoken With Love: Week 5 Day 1
Genesis 15:1-6
After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield,
your very great reward.”
2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.” 5 He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
6 Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.
Have you ever had a word spoken to you that you couldn’t quite accept or understand? Maybe it was a random promotion or raise. Maybe you found out your family was expecting a new child or sibling. Think of Abram (later Abraham) sitting as an elderly man with no children of his own, and yet he is promised heirs that outnumber the stars; I’m sure that came as a shock. He was given the promise of ongoing lineage and blessing even though he was later in years. The key item here, however, is the item we are going to talk about all week:
“Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6).
Abram believed what God had to say. His faith is what demonstrated his good standing with God. Can you look at your faith and say the same? With a situation like this, it seems easy, but as the story goes on, we will ask that same question again, and it will be hard not to let the answer change.
