Spoken With Love: Week 3 Day 1

Job 1:20 – 21

 At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

    and naked I will depart.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;

    may the name of the Lord be praised.”

Summary of Job chapters 1 & 2 (which we encourage you to read in its entirety):

Job is a righteous man before God, an extremely wealthy man, and “the greatest man among all the people of the East” (Job 1:3). In two different angelic meetings before God that Satan attended, God and Satan had a conversation in which God asked Satan if he had observed the heart of Job; God was pointing out that Job was a holy man and faithful to God. Satan responded, “Why wouldn’t he be? Look at everything you’ve given him. Take it all away, and he will surely curse you!” (Job 1:9-10). Both times, God consented but told Satan he couldn’t kill Job. So, Satan goes out and, using tragic events, takes away all ten of Job’s children, all of his wealth, all of his possessions, and, in chapter 2, all of his health. At the end of chapter 2, we find Job and his wife living in a garbage dump with Job covered from head to toe in sores. Immediately after Job loses his children, wealth, and possessions, he responded with the following from Job 1:20-21:

At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21 and said:

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,

    and naked I will depart.

The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;

    may the name of the Lord be praised.”

WHAT IN THE WORLD!! Imagine this: Your whole world has fallen apart! Everything that is important to you and everything that has sustained you is completely gone! All you are left with are the clothes on your back. No bank account, no house, no work, no income, and worst of all, no explanation for why this has happened!

 How would you respond?

Unbelievably, Job chooses to praise God! In Job 2:10, Job says to his wife, “Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?” Throughout Job’s life, he chose to trust God in the good times and the bad, knowing that God always had his back; he could praise God, even throughout the very difficult times.

How about you? Where’s your faith? Is it in your work? Your possessions? Your relationships? Or is your faith in God; the One who said, “I will be with you always, to the very end of the ages” (Matthew 28:20)?

Rest assured, no matter what you are going through, you can trust God because He is with you, ALWAYS!
