ON YOUR MARK: WEEK 3 DAY 3

Mark 3:13-19

The Twelve Apostles

13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach 15 and have authority to cast out demons. 16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Before I watch a movie, I check the Plugged In online review to know if this movie lines up with the standards God has placed on my heart for guarding my mind, eyes, and ears. As I review it, I try to avoid anything the reviewer prefaces with “spoiler alert” so I can still enjoy the story unfolding.

If you are reading the Gospels for the first time, you might want “spoiler alert” in front of the last bit of Mark 3:19. Judas, a man who in Mark 3:13 says, was one of “those he (Jesus) wanted,” would eventually betray Him. The thing about spoiler alerts in movies is that they ruin the story because you feel you now know things the characters don’t. Jesus was fully man and fully God. We have no reason to believe that Jesus did not know when He called Judas, what he would one day do. Jesus called him, equipped him, served him, and loved him, even though Judas would betray Him. 

We may bless, serve, teach, and help others who will eventually betray us, but that is not the point. Our job is obedience to God, and we must trust the outcome to Him.
