ON YOUR MARK: WEEK 5 DAY 6

Mark 5: 35-43

35 While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house some who said, “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?” 36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.38 They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 And when he had entered, he said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? The child is not dead but sleeping.” 40 And they laughed at him. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him and went in where the child was.41 Taking her by the hand he said to her, “Talitha cumi,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” 42 And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age), and they were immediately overcome with amazement. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.

In today’s passage, Jesus tells Jairus “Do not fear, only believe.” (Mark 5:36). As Christ followers, we are told the same thing (for more examples reference Isaiah 41:10, 2 Timothy 1:7, 1 John 4:8). Often, our belief is accompanied by fear.  As a lifelong Cubs fan, I believe every April is the year that we will win it all. Every year, sometimes as early as June, the fear creeps in that maybe my belief was misplaced. Jesus tells us that fear and faith do not belong together.

In this week’s verses, we read that Jesus rebuked the waves and wind, casted out demons, subdued disease, and conquered death. When we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we are given not a spirit of fear, but power!

“Same Power” is a beautiful Jeremy Camp song. These words below from that song encourage me every time I hear them:

“The same power that rose Jesus from the grave

The same power that commands the dead to wake

Lives in us, lives in us

The same power that moves mountains when He speaks

The same power that can calm a raging sea

Lives in us, lives in us

He lives in us, lives in us”
