ON YOUR MARK: WEEK 8 DAY 6

Mark 9:9 – 13

9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean. 11 And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” 12 And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

I don’t know why, but the phrase, “They kept the matter to themselves…” (Mark 9:10) continues to grab my attention when I read this passage of Scripture. Sure, it was a command from Jesus that they not utter a word about what they had just witnessed, but the fact that they were able to keep something as epic as what they had just seen from any of the other followers is impressive!

Have you ever been in a situation where you realize that if you had just “kept the matter to yourself” you would not be facing the trouble you are facing now, or the fracture of a relationship, because you said something you should have kept to yourself?

Proverbs 17:1 says, “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.”

Is there something you’re sitting on right now that you should be keeping to yourself? Pray against the temptation to “share” something that should remain quiet. If you’ve already crossed the line and have shared something you should not have, move immediately to seek forgiveness and repent of that action. Then you will have peace and quiet in your life!
