Summer At Sea: Week 9 Day 2

Matthew 3:13-17

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Did you know that the essential word of the Christian faith, the Trinity, is not a word we find in the Bible? Rather, the first believers came to understand the incredible concept of the perfect singular God existing in the three persons of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, because the idea permeates the whole Bible. This story is one of the most direct examples of this, as it is a complete display of God being both singular and three persons, all in one place. While this concept may seem foreign or downright confusing, the reality is that God, who made everything according to His perfect plan, permits this idea to not make total sense to us. Instead, it is a mysterious and miraculous concept we know to be true, and we trust in God’s perfect, beautiful design. It demonstrates to us the perfection of God’s relationship with us, which He has created for us in the salvation we receive through Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and ascension.
