Two days ago we talked about God judging both the Egyptians and the false gods of the land; in today’s Scripture we can see how He did this. First, God used a mighty east wind to split the sea in front of the supposed “storm god,” Baal (Exodus 14:21). Just like that, God strips the false deity of his authority over wind.

One of the greatest animated movies of all time, in my humble opinion, is Prince of Egypt. It is a Dreamworks movie from the 1990’s that tells the story of Exodus. I can picture this scene that we read about today specifically because it is one of the most epic pieces of animation ever

One of the most fascinating things in Exodus is God’s complete control of everything. God sent Pharaoh after the Israelites, “hardening his heart” (Exodus 14:8). Why? Well, to the Israelites, the Egyptians, their king, and their false gods were the things they feared most.

God arranges everything so that He can establish His Glory, and we as modern Christians, have two thousand years of Biblical scholarship that point to this. Now imagine being an Israelite who knew God from stories passed down by family, having just escaped slavery, being told to “turn back” (Exodus 14:2).

When the Israelites came out of Egypt, God was preparing everything in an effort to establish His supremacy as God to His people. Looking through this story, God changed directions, not because He was frightened of the Philistines as He knows everyone is under His power, but instead He considered the fickle minds of humanity and decided to protect them from their own ignorance.
