Summer At Sea: Week 10 Day 5

Matthew 8:23-27 (ESV)

23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

You may have noticed that this is the third time we have read about Jesus calming the storm this week.  Each account we have read is the same story, but each author includes different details that they encountered.

In today’s reading, I love how Matthew noticed that the disciples followed Jesus into the boat.  Jesus knew that a great windstorm would arise allowing terrifying conditions to occur; He is fully God and knows everything.  Yet, He still went aboard the boat and allowed the disciples to follow Him across the lake.

Following Jesus doesn’t ever ensure that our life will be easy, problem-free, or predictable.  However, it does ensure that we get to walk step-by-step with Jesus, trusting that His way is best.  We allow Him to lead us through the storms, valleys, and mountain top experiences of our lives.  We are never alone and He is always with us.
