The Un-Series: Week 2 Day 5

Hebrews 11:8-12

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. 11 And by faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. 12 And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.

I often wonder what my kids and grandkids will say about me when I am gone. I wonder if they will laugh at my quirks and admire my love of family meals and adventures. I wonder if my granddaughters will miss the cologne I wear and the fun we all had when we had sleep overs,  read together, listened to stories, etc. I feel bad for Abram/Abraham as the main thing they seem to remember about him is that he was “as good as dead” (Hebrew 11:12). Yet, it was his age that made his story remarkable, and when Abraham was the age that a lot of people get a condo someplace warm for the winters, Abraham continued to obey God and started a nation. Not a small business, a NATION! 

I think the statement that he was “as good as dead” was a play on words to remind the people that God is never done with his faithful servants, no matter how old. I mean Caleb was 80 when he finally got to fight against giants for the Promised Land; Moses was also 80 when he started leading God’s people. How about you, is your legacy as yet un-finished and unknown? Do not give up my friends, today is not finished yet!
