Summer At Sea: Week 7 Day 3

Jonah 1: 8-9

8 So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”

9 He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

Irony is a funny thing. Sometimes, what we are looking for is right in front of our faces, like when we are looking for the glasses sitting on top of our heads. Or, what we are running from happens to be inescapable, no matter how hard we try to avoid it.

In this verse, Jonah answers the Gentiles by stating his origin and ethnicity, indicating that he is from Israel. The irony is that he claims to worship the Lord who made the sea and the land. Right here in the text, he points out that God created the sea, which is the very place he currently is and where he chose to go to run from the Lord. This is also a powerful statement: we are part of the world that God created Himself.

The next time you are anxious or in your kind of storm, remember that God created the heavens and the earth. He created both the land and the sea. He created all places and things that may cause us storms or fears in our lives. Turn to Him in these moments and remember He has control and power over these very things.
